Description

Invitation...
Following our 2017 Circuit Conference, “Growing Followers of Jesus... Developing Holy
Habits”, congregations of our Sheffield Methodist Circuit are invited to join the Holy Habits Programme.

Why join?
The programme is based on St Luke’s portrayal in Acts 2.42-47 of the vibrant and growing early Christian community... disciples growing spiritually, congregations growing spiritually and the Lord adding to their number. Further, this picture re-emerges when the Holy Spirit renews the church in discipleship and mission (James Dunn, The Acts of the Apostles, Epworth1996, p34)... something we long for, and pray for, in our churches and Circuit today.

What is “The Holy Habits Programme?
In our Conference, the Revd Andrew Roberts emphasises the importance of Acts 2.42-47 and of the associated 10 Holy Habits in relation to discipleship and growth. He makes reference to his book “Holy Habits” (Andrew Roberts, Holy Habits, Malcolm Down Publishing, 2016).
In response to “Holy Habits”, the Birmingham Methodist Circuit have developed, and now successfully, delivered, “The Holy Habits Programme”. They provided sets of materials to churches for each of the 10 Holy Habits:

Biblical Teaching; Fellowship; Breaking of Bread; Prayer; Giving (sharing of resources);
Service; Eating Together; Gladness and Generosity; Worship,
and Making More Disciples.

Each set for each Habit comprised material for:

Worship; Small Groups; Bible Study; Community / World Engagement; Films,
Books, Conferences, and for Children and Young People.

Each Habit was initially introduced in Sunday Worship on the same Sunday in participating churches and completed by churches in about 2 months according to an agreed Circuit timetable. The whole programme was completed in 2 years. This Programme has now been edited, prepared for publication and will be available from January 2018. In this Circuit, master copies of these resources will be provided to churches who join the Programme.

Those interested in exploring the Programme in more detail, should book to attend thiWorkshop on Saturday morning, 3rd February 2018 at Wesley Hall, Crookes, Sheffield S10 1UD. Please note, the aim of this workshop is to provide members, churches, or groups of churches interested in working together, with the information necessary for them to decide whether or not they would wish to participate in the Programme.
This workshop will aim:

  • to introduced the programme in more detail;
  • to share some of the provided materials;
  • to agree a start date for the programme and a timetable and order for the delivery
  • of the Habits;
  • to agree membership of a small Steering Group to oversee the delivery of the
  • Programme.
  • to agree a date for churches to fully commit, or otherwise, to joining the Programme.
